My Advice to University Graduates (Old and New)

20 July 2015

It's that time of year again  - where graduation caps fill Instagram feeds, and universities get busy with preparing graduation memorabilia. I remember graduation day pretty vividly. Walking up those steps onto that grand stage and claiming my degree, was a feeling unlike no other. I remember feeling like I has truly conquered education, and I was on top of the world. Seriously, I wouldn't stop jumping up and down that day with such excitement. Embrace that moment, and remember that feeling as you take your first steps into adulthood.
There'll be a moment on that very day were you look around at all the people you've shared classes with, memories with and acknowledge the fact that you may never see some of these people again. That the one thing that has tied you together for all these years has come to close. You'll be grateful for the memories. It'll be time of a new chapter - one that you don't know where it'll lead you to, or where you'll even be a year from now. Some of the people you hold dear to you will remain close. Others will drift away into their new lives. But in the end that truly is okay. It's normal and in fact it'll be important you do go through these moments because it'll help you grow into a much more well rounded person in the long run.

There's this perception that you truly find yourself in university, and while that may be true on some level - in my experience university is just the start. Life is about creating and knowing so many different versions of yourself throughout this crazy ride. Your university experience is a stepping stone into life - the journeys you have yet to face, and the people you still have yet to meet. Learning is far from over once you receive your degree - and it's a good thing it isn't! You'd be bored out of your mind if it was! There are so many places yet undiscovered, unexplored, waiting for you beyond the horizon.

You will have days that will be incredible - over the moon in fact - but you'll also have days when you'll feel just as lost and confused as ever. But you know what, that's okay. In fact it's perfect. Some of the most beautiful and wonderful things happen during those mysteriously confusing times. Think of everything you go through as a learning curve, an experience. A stepping stone into finding something incredible. It may you take you a few weeks, it may take longer, but you know what - it'll be worth it. When you're painting a canvas, it does't happen all at once. It takes time, dedication and most of all passion. And when those small little sections of the painting begin to form and take shape, you may not see the bigger picture just yet. Give it time, because in time they will come together to form something incredible. Keep the faith, keep perspective, and most of all - never stop learning. Congratulations for achieving this incredible moment, and may the world space back as you make your steps into your brightly lit and mysterious future! I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours!
